There are a ton of different ways that your teeth can become more yellow or discolored. Drinks like coffee and wine can often cause this issue, and foods like apples can add to the discoloration as well. Aging is another very common culprit for yellowing teeth. As we age the enamel breaks down and shows the teeth’s true colors, which happens to be yellow.

Fortunately, there are also plenty of teeth whitening methods out there. You could go in to your dentist to have your teeth whitened professionally, go through a deep bleaching procedure, or be a do-it-yourselfer and get teeth whitening strips. Teeth whitening strips are usually the cheapest way to fix this, but how effective are they? In order to figure out the effectiveness of teeth whitening strips, we need to take look at how teeth whitening strips work.

You can usually purchase a multitude of different teeth whitening strips at drugstores for between 10 and 30 dollars. Keep in mind that even if you get strips from the dentist they shouldn’t go over the hundred dollar mark. These strips are thin, and made of polyethylene – a type of plastic. The polyethylene is coated in a peroxide-based gel that is the main ingredient that helps with the whitening. The polyethylene is flexible, and once applied has a way of sinking into the teeth and creating a mold that gets into the enamel.

The peroxide is the reason for the whitening of the teeth, while an acid known as urea breaks apart any stain bonds that are on the teeth which allows the whitening to go deeper. The effectiveness of teeth whitening strips depends almost entirely on their ability to get deep into the enamel and spread whitening agents.

The nice thing about whitening strips is that you can often start to see results after just a few days of using them. You’ll apply them twice each day for around 30 minutes each, for about 2 weeks or so. This timing can vary, but generally this is how long it will take to see some results. Once you’re finished using up all of your teeth whitening strips, the final results will last about four months or so. The final results you notice should be a whiter and brighter smile.

Everybody’s teeth are a little different, so different types of teeth whitening may be necessary for different people. There are whitening agents that are definitely more effective and fast acting, but these powerful substances are only accessible by dental professionals. If you’re looking for an instant fix, this might be the best way to go, since results can often be shown within the same day. If you’re not sure that teeth whitening strips are the best way to invest in whitening your teeth, contact your dentist and have a conversation to make sure. Most dentists will have a few different in-office whitening strategies to offer you that are often much more satisfying for people who are looking for a whiter and brighter smile.
