Top 3 Options for Tooth Replacement | Hawkeye Sleep CenterIf you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth it can be difficult to determine which tooth replacement option is right for you. There are a number of options for replacing the look and function of missing teeth. Three of the top options include dental implants, bridges, and dentures. The right option for you will depend upon a number of factors including the number of teeth you have missing, the condition of your gums, and your jawbone.

Dental implants

Getting a dental implant is one of the most permanent solutions to tooth loss. A dental implant is placed into your jawbone and creates a replacement root. The replacement tooth remains on the surface of the gums and looks and functions like a normal tooth. Once you have a dental implant put in you can treat it the same way you treat your natural teeth. The design of the implant replaces the structure you were missing from the root of your natural tooth. This process protects your jaw from further degeneration and keeps your other teeth from shifting. Dental implants are an option if you are missing one or a few teeth. However, your jawbone and gums have to be in a healthy condition in order for dental implants to be placed. Your dentist will have to assess the condition of your oral health to determine if you are good candidate for dental implants.

Dental bridges

Dental bridges are an option for replacing one or multiple teeth. The design of the bridge is to use surrounding teeth as an anchor. A replacement tooth sits on top of the gums and it is anchored in by using surrounding teeth. A bridge can only work if you have some remaining teeth that are healthy and can act as anchors. Bridges can be removable or fixed depending on your needs. As with implants, your dentist will have to assess the condition of your oral health to determine if you are a good candidate for dental bridges.

Dentures

Dentures are a tooth replacement option for someone who is missing several or all teeth. Dentures are removable and require special care. With a well-designed and well-fitting set of dentures you can eat just about any food you want. The conditions of your gums and overall oral health will also impact your ability to be fit for dentures. Getting dentures that fit and work well is a process that your dentist will help you through.

If you are missing one or multiple teeth you have options for replacement. You do not have to continue living your life dealing with the consequences of missing teeth. You can schedule an appointment with your dentist to explore tooth replacement options and determine which one is best for you.
