Gum disease can begin as a minor issue and end up causing major health problems if left untreated. In the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis) gums are usually red, swollen, and tender, but the infection hasn’t had any structural effects on the teeth. If left unchecked, gingivitis becomes more severe and turns into periodontitis.
